What to Expect After Wisdom Tooth Removal
Recovery from wisdom tooth extraction typically takes between 2 to 4 days. You’ll be provided with pain relief medication to manage any post-operative discomfort, and it’s normal for the face to swell slightly during this time.
To support a smooth and speedy recovery, follow these care tips:
- Bite down gently but firmly on gauze pads to help control bleeding, replacing them as they become soaked.
- Take care not to bite your cheek or tongue while the area is still numb.
- Avoid lying flat—keep your head elevated with pillows to minimise bleeding.
- Apply an ice pack to the outside of your jaw to reduce swelling and ease pain.
- Refrain from strenuous activity for at least 48 hours post-surgery.
- Stick to soft foods such as mashed potatoes, pureed vegetables, or soft serve.
- Rinse your mouth several times daily with warm salt water to reduce swelling and keep the area clean.
